Pickle (achar) is one of the best businesses to start from your own kitchen. Customers love homemade taste, investment is low, and good pickles sell again and again through word of mouth. You can grow from a home setup to a small unit selling across India online.

What Pickles to Make?
- Year-round sellers: mango, lime, mixed vegetable, green chilli, garlic
- Regional specials: Andhra avakaya, Rajasthani ker-sangri, Konkan mango, Punjabi mixed
- Premium: non-veg pickles (chicken, prawn), no-onion-garlic pickles, low-oil and jaggery-based sweet pickles
Tip: Start with 4–5 recipes you make really well. Your "signature" pickle becomes your brand.
Equipment
- Vegetable cutting machine (mango cutter, slicer)
- Large stainless steel vessels and mixing tubs
- Spice grinder
- Glass or food-grade PET jars, lids, induction sealer
- Labels and a weighing scale
- Clean storage racks, away from sunlight and moisture
Making It Shelf-Stable
Pickles last because of salt, oil, acid (vinegar or lemon) and low moisture. To avoid spoilage:
- Dry the cut vegetables or fruits well before mixing
- Use dry, sterilised jars and dry spoons
- Keep oil above the pickle surface
- Test shelf life before you sell widely, and get a food lab report for bigger buyers
Licences
- FSSAI registration (turnover up to ₹12 lakh) or licence (above that). This is required even for home businesses.
- Udyam registration
- GST when you cross the limit or sell on marketplaces (GST guide)
- Legal Metrology registration for packed products
- Trademark for your brand name

Plan Around the Mango Season
Mango pickle is the top seller, and raw mangoes are available mainly from April to June. Make and stock enough mango pickle in season to sell all year. That needs working capital, so plan your funds before summer.
How to Sell
- Friends, family and housing society WhatsApp groups (start here)
- Local kirana shops, sweet shops and supermarkets
- Food exhibitions, melas and farmers' markets
- Amazon, Flipkart and your own Instagram page or website
- Gift hampers for Diwali and corporate gifting
Funding
A pickle unit fits a Mudra (Shishu or Kishore) loan. Self-help groups may get seed capital under PMFME (check current status). See Government Schemes for MSMEs.
