GST for Small Business: When to Register, Rates and Returns in Simple Words (2026)

Last updated: October 2026

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the tax added when you sell goods or services. As a small business owner, you need to know four things: when to register, what rate to charge, what to file, and how to save tax legally. Here they are in simple words.

Step 1: Do You Need GST Registration?

You must register once your total yearly sales cross:

You sellMost statesSome north-eastern & hill states Goods₹40 lakh₹20 lakh Services₹20 lakh₹10 lakh

You need GST even with small sales if you:

  • Sell goods to another state
  • Sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho or other online marketplaces

Registration is free on gst.gov.in. Keep your PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, bank details and a photo ready.

Step 2: Know Your GST Rate

GST rates became simpler from 22 September 2025. There are now four main rates:

RateFor what 0%Basic essentials (fresh food, some medicines, notebooks, personal health and life insurance) 5%Daily-use items: many packaged foods, soaps, toothpaste, farm machines 18%Most other goods and services. This is the standard rate. 40%Luxury and harmful goods: tobacco, pan masala, cold drinks, big cars

The old 12% and 28% rates are mostly gone. Tip: Check your product's HSN code (SAC for services) to find its exact rate. Using an old rate is a common mistake.

Step 3: Choose Regular GST or the Composition Scheme

Composition scheme (simple, low tax)

  • For businesses with sales up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh in some states)
  • Pay a small fixed tax on sales: 1% for traders and manufacturers, 5% for restaurants
  • File only once a quarter (payment) and once a year (return)

But: you can't charge GST on your bill, can't claim tax paid on purchases, and can't sell to other states or on online marketplaces.

Good for: local shops, small eateries and small units selling directly to customers.

Regular GST

Better if you sell to other businesses, because they can claim the GST you charge. You also get credit for the GST you paid on your purchases.

Step 4: File Your Returns on Time

  • GSTR-1: your sales list
  • GSTR-3B: summary and tax payment

If your sales are up to ₹5 crore, you can file these every 3 months instead of monthly (QRMP scheme), while paying tax monthly. Late filing means a daily fine plus interest.

What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

Suppose you buy raw material and pay ₹1,800 GST, then sell your product and collect ₹3,000 GST. You pay the government only the difference, ₹1,200. That ₹1,800 is your input tax credit. To get it, your supplier must file their GST return on time.
