Candle Making Business: Plain vs Scented Candles, Cost, Materials and Profit (2026)

Last updated: October 2026

Candle making can start in a home kitchen with very little money. There are two very different markets: plain candles (high volume, low margin, sold for daily and power-cut use and religious places) and scented and decorative candles (gifting, home décor and festivals, with much higher margins). Diwali, Christmas and the wedding season are peak times.

Funding

Safety Tips

  • Never leave melting wax unattended. Wax is flammable.
  • Use a double boiler, not direct high flame
  • Use the right wick size; a wrong wick causes smoke or tunnelling
  • Print burn safety instructions on every candle

Common Questions Can I start candle making from home?

Yes. Scented and decorative candles are commonly made at home on a small scale.

Which wax is best?

Paraffin is cheaper and common. Soy wax is natural, burns cleaner and suits premium products.

Is candle making profitable outside Diwali?

Yes, with gifting, home décor and corporate orders, though festival months bring the biggest sales.
