Paper cups are used at tea stalls, offices, hospitals, events, weddings, juice centres and vending machines. A single automatic machine can make tens of thousands of cups a day. It is a volume business with small profit per cup, so success depends on running the machine full time with steady bulk orders.
Quick Facts Investment₹10–20 lakh (automatic machine + setup + working capital) Space500–1,000 sq ft OutputAbout 25,000–40,000 cups/day per automatic machine (single shift) MarginAround ₹0.10–0.25 per cup Best forAreas with many tea stalls, offices, events and distributors
Cup Sizes and Uses
- 65–110 ml: tea and coffee at stalls and offices (highest volume)
- 150–250 ml: coffee, juice, vending machines
- 300 ml+ and ice-cream cups: cafés, cold drinks, desserts
- Printed cups: branding for cafés and companies (higher margin)
Raw Material
- Cupstock paper: food-grade paper with an inner coating so liquid doesn't leak. It is the main cost.
- Bottom reel: paper for the cup base
- Printed blanks: buy pre-printed, die-cut blanks (easier to start), or print and die-cut yourself
Coating rules: Many paper cups use a thin plastic (PE) lining. Some states have issued their own guidance on plastic-coated disposables, and aqueous or bio-coated cupstock is growing. Check your state's current rules before you invest.

Who Buys Paper Cups?
- Disposable product wholesalers and distributors (your main volume)
- Tea and coffee stalls, cafés, juice centres
- Offices, factories, hospitals and colleges
- Caterers and event and wedding organisers
- Vending machine operators
Funding
A paper cup unit fits PMEGP or a Mudra Tarun loan, or a CGTMSE bank loan. See Government Schemes for MSMEs.
Common Mistakes
- Buying a machine before lining up distributors, so the machine sits idle
- Using cheap non-food-grade paper
- Ignoring seasonality: hot-drink cup demand dips in peak summer, so add cold-drink and ice-cream cups
Common Questions How many cups can one machine make?
Typical automatic machines make 50–90 cups a minute, so roughly 25,000–40,000 cups in a single 8-hour shift.
Should I print cups myself?
Start with pre-printed blanks from suppliers. Add your own printing once your orders grow.
Is the paper cup business still allowed?
Paper cups are widely used, but rules on plastic-coated items vary by state. Check local guidance and consider eco-friendly coatings.
Disclaimer: Costs, prices and rules are indicative. Confirm current plastic and food-contact rules in your state.
